During his lifetime Vogler was seldom free from controversy and many of his critics accused him of being a charlatan and an eccentric. However, his record as a teacher is impressive, with pupils including Carl Maria von Weber, Peter von Winter and Giacomo Meyerbeer. He enjoyed "the admiration of patrons and pupils throughout his career and in retrospect he stands out as an innovative musical thinker and practitioner. His accomplishments not only added a colourful voice to European musical life of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but also exerted far-reaching influence on his successors" (Grove).
