Description |
Cloth. Dedicated to Carl Wilhelm Eugen Stenhammar (1871-1927). From the library of Ernest Read (1879-1965) with a note in his hand stating that the work was completed in 1924, together with a statement regarding Beecham’s performance of the symphony at the Proms. The sixth symphony, described by the composer as "pure spring water" was first performed on 19 February 1923; Sibelius had been drinking heavily, and at a performance a few months after the première he caused a scandal when he conducted the work in Göteborg whilst drunk. Later in the year, deeply depressed, he wrote in his diary: "Alcohol, which I gave up, is now my most faithful companion. And the most understanding! Everything and everyone else have largely failed me". |
