Rossini's first publication - this is the first known publication of any music by Rossini, only the present excerpt from the opera was published at the time, the complete vocal score appearing in the winter of 1825/6. Demetrio e Polibio was the first opera composed by Rossini (ca 1810) but was not performed until two years later (by which time five other had been given, in Venice, Bologna and Ferrara). The first performance was at the Teatro Valle, Rome, on 18 May 1812. The opera had been commissioned by the tenor Domenico Mombelli (1751-1835), whose wife Vicenzina wrote the libretto; he and their daughters Marianna and Ester sang in the Rome première.
