Description Leather (rubbed and worn), front board re-attached and hinges and corners reinforced. Raised bands, gilt backstrip. A scarce copy of a book important to French culture, and a lovely production. Frontispiece of the Parnassus by Tardieu. There were three supplements to the 1732 work, in 1743, 1755, and 1760 (as luminaries either died or gave up their art); an initial abbreviated volume (Description du Parnasse François) was published in 1727 in 12mo. Titon du Tillet originally conceived this project as an immense sculpture garden honouring the great poets, musicians and artists of Louis XIV's reign. The estimated cost of over two million livres forced him to terminate the project and commence this more manageable monument in print. Titon du Tillet's Parnasse is a fundamental source of information about French Baroque composers. Like the Hirsch copy, this contains an additional six leaves (pp.661-672), not recorded in RISM.
Reference RISM B/VI/2 p.834. Hirsch I.579. Not in Gregory & Bartlett.
