Quarter morocco, raised bands, gilt, publisher's printed illustrated, coloured and gilt wrappers bound in. With a full-page autograph inscription tipped in, in ink dated 16 March 1894, the day of the first performance, by the composer to the singer Jean-François Delmas (1861-1933) who created the role of Athanel: " ... Athanael a été écrit pour vous, absoluement pour vous. Vous étiez dèja reconnu comme un admirable artiste - tout l'honneur est donc pour moi de vous avoir choisi pour collaborateur, votre reconnaissant & vieil ami, Massenet ...". We surmise that this must be from the singer's copy of the first edition but transferred to this copy when he was performing the revised version in 1904. Superb copy with superb association. Also with an illustrated programme from a performance on 14 March 1904 with Delmas in the title role. |
