Sewn in publisher's printed yellow wrappers (corners and backstrip a little worn). A little overall creasing; the lower part of the final leaf has been cut away. The first version of the opera was premiered on 19 October 1845. After the première, which Wagner conducted, he immediately revised the third act. The revised version, according to Newman, was given on 1 August 1847 and given again by Liszt at Weimar in January 1849, but it was not until the next production at Schwerin in January 1852 that the opera became extremely successful and was heard regularly throughout Europe and elsewhere. |
