| Description |
Cloth covered in brown paper (front hinge broken). Manuscript score in dark brown ink on twenty-four stave paper produced by Novello & Co before the publication of the full score in 1905, with a number ("IV" overwritten with "II") indicating this was score no.2 or 4 in their lending library; following printing of the score the publisher would not have needed to lend out manuscript copies and thus they became redundant, which fits with the ownership signature of John D. Knight, dated 1905, on front free end-paper. Comparison with Elgar's autograph manuscript (Add. MS 57997) held by the British Library indicates that this score was copied directly from the autograph, or another direct copy, as the text follows the identical page layout. The musical text of the score seems to represent the latest musical text in the autography (which was much revised and corrected). |
