Description |
Plain blue covers. A few curled corners. Prepared under the direction of Giraud, Machinist at the Opéra, this section of the Encyclopédie is one of the most important sources for information on the machinery of eighteenth-century theatres and opera-houses. The plates are divided into two sections: the first twenty-seven illustrate the mechanics of machines in use at the Opéra; of the remaining plates ten include insets of a particular scene in which a machine is employed, with a plan showing the technique required to produce the right dramatic effect. |
