Description |
Contemporary mottled calf (generally a little rubbed, head of backstrip worn). "Following his election to the Académie Française in 1780, Chabanon placed the Observations as the first part of an augmented and revised major work on musical aesthetics, De la musique considérée en elle-même et dans ses rapports avec la parole, les langues, la poésie, et le théâtre (Paris, 1785). Chabanon explained that the first obligation of music is not to paint but to sing. He acknowledged the traditional sovereignty of melody but, as a supporter of Rameau, he strongly defended the essential role of harmony. His recognition of generalized expressivity in purely instrumental music was innovative in France at that time" (Grove Online). |
