Description |
Publisher's printed boards (edges worn, backstrip worn away, sewing broken). Internally good. Engraved music. Final 7pp. comprising "Three Airs with Variations". Title signed by Elouis. Advertisement by John Elouis contains criticism of Thomson's collection: Haydn’s accompaniments "although replete with merit, give no idea of Scottish Music; and, for that reason, may be compared to a portrait exquisitely painted, but deficient in resemblance". Therefore no symphonies here, and accompaniments can be played as lessons for harp, pianoforte or organ; texts adapted by his wife. Subscribers include: "Dr Burney, Chelsea College; Dr Clark, Edinburgh; Dr Crotch; Mr Erard, Great Marlborough Street, London; Mr Pleyel, the celebrated Composer; J.B. Viotti; Mr Walsh, organist, Dublin ... 24 copies".’ |
