Description Red hard-grain morocco, spine richly gilt in compartments to a floral motif, gilt border on covers, a.e.g. With a fore-edge painting reproducing James Gillray's (1756-1815) engraving of 1802 titled "The pic-nic orchestra": a satire on the Pic-Nic Society, an exclusive London club, under the leadership of Lady Albinia Buckinghamshire at the piano, they performed fashionable amusements for private aristocratic audiences, which were mercilessly attacked by the newspaper critics and journalists. Comprising Colonel Henry Francis Greville (1760-1816, playing a violin), on the left is Lord Mount Richard Edgcumbe (1764-1839, 2nd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, playing a cello), behind him is Lord George James Cholmondeley (1748-1827, 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley, playing a flute), the pianist is Albinia Hobart [née Bertie] (d.1816, Countess of Buckinghamshire), and to the pianist's left is Mary Amelia Cecil [née Hill] (1750-1835, Marchioness of Salisbury) playing the French horn with one hand. From the library of George Kitchin (1827-1912), the Oxford scholar and Dean of Winchester, with his bookplate on the verso of front free end-paper and his name rubber-stamped at head of title; from the collection of Christopher Hogwood (1941-2014). Exquisite.
